Instrumentations in the New Laboratory of Experimental Volcanology will allow determination of the following properties:

- Low and high T viscosity of liquid and liquids+ crystals and bubbles

concentric cylinder viscosimeter (high T)
Micropenetration viscosimeter (Low T)
Uniaxial press

- High T volumetric measurements:

Dilatometer

- Calorimetric measurements (enthalphy and specific heat determinations)

Differential scanning calorimeter

- Experimental petrology

Concentric cylinder viscometer

Applications: High Temperature rheological measurements with Couette method at controlled deformation rates.

Technical details: The instrumentation is build up of: 1) Paar Rheolab QC rheometer + supporting framework; 2) Theta Industries MoSi2 box high temperature furnace with buildin controller; 3) Pt and Mo-spindles to insert in the molten material in a Pt80Rh20 and graphite crucibles; viscosity range 0 - 106 Pa s (depending on the assembly geometry). Temperature up to 1700 °C; Accessories: NIST calibration glasses and liquids; personal computer + software (Rheoplus R/N) + Windows XP

 
 
 
 

Dilatometer Setaram - Setsys

Application: Determination of the linear thermal expansion and expansion coefficients; determination of volume expansion and density change; determination of the glass transition, softening and sintering temperatures. Phase transitions and kinetic studies due to phase transitions and exsolution of volatile phases.

Micropenetration. Vertical dilatometer.

Application: Viscosity measurement

Viscosity range 108-1012 Pa s. T up to 1000°C

 
 
 
 

Uniaxial press (Geocomp LoadTracII)

Application: studies of deformation of rocks and multiphase rheology of magmas.

Technical details The unit performs both constant displacement rate and constant load tests. Displacement is achieved by controlling the position of the bottom platen using an electronic stepper motor with a displacement speed range from 5 × 10-6 to 2.5 × 10-2 cm/s and measured using a builtin linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) displacement transducer. The press allow loads up to about 40 KN that produce stresses on our samples of about 20-30 MPa high-T tube furnace that allow for temperature up to 1100°C; hydrothermal cell. Software multitasking.

Micro Raman Integrato Jobin Yvon Mod. LABRAM

Specifics: Spettrometer Horiba Jobin Yvon LABRAM HR800 (equipe with two gratings 1800 and 600 grooves /mm) e detector CCD (-70°C).
Optical microscope Olympus. Objectives 10X, 20X, 50X e 100X.
Motorized stage
1 laser source:  HeNe (wavelength 633 nm, power 20 mW).  Super Notch Plus filters.  
PC with  Labspec 5 software

Applications: Spectroscopic studies of amorphous and crystalline materials. It can be applied to structural studies of a large variety  of materials, proteins, nano-materials, semiconductors , polymers as well as biological, pharmaceutical and forensic samples.
